PushPush finds new 'Life' in Tennessee Williams

The three short plays of PushPush Theater’s Life Inc. explores the more experimental side of the legendary Southern playwright. Director Alison Hastings and her cast challenge some of our preconceived notions about Williams’ work, while affirming his gift for drawing out lyrical moments.

1941’s “The Case of the Crushed Petunias” plays almost like a sketch comedy version of the Stanley Kowalski/Blanche Dubois dynamic in A Streetcar Named Desire . Prim Dorothy Simple (Erin Burnett) is all a flutter that a stranger trampled her flowerbed with size 11D shoes. (And you know what they say about guys with big feet.) She reports the possibility of a “petuniacidal maniac,” then receives a visit from a strange young man (Matt Myers) with 11D shoes and suspenders over his white T-shirt.

Myers’ contained physicality radiates confidence as the man claims to represent “Life, Incorporated” and tries to convince Ms. Simple to open herself to worldly pleasures, rather than fall under the sway of his competitor, “Death Unlimited.” “Crushed Petunias” hinges on the Man’s seductive sales pitch, which gradually wears down Ms. Simple’s protests. Wade Tilton’s shadow puppets add a pleasing note of whimsy, but Burnett plays Ms. Simple as a caricature of oppression. The role obviously doesn’t call for naturalism, but the performance trades on a familiar stereotype rather than reflect contemporary personalities.

“Talk To Me Like the Rain and Let Me Listen” evokes Williams’ background as a poet as it shows two substance-abusing lost souls, powerfully played by Justin Welborn and Stacy Melich. Each has along monologue that dominates their conversation, with him describing a misspent night that plays less like comedy than a man hitting bottom: “When I woke it, I was in a bathtub full of ice cubes and Miller Beer.” A hotel room dominates her conversation as well, but she envisions getting away from it all and vanishing into a life of leisure. They both come across as trapped in self-destructive habits, a go-nowhere relationship and a city indifferent to whether they live or die.

In the most famous play on the bill, “This Property is Condemned,” the playwright’s young namesake Tom (Ricky Boynton) plays hooky with his kite only to encounter a childish yet nubile classmate Willie (Brittany Loffert) living in sordid circumstances. Is she following in her sister’s footsteps as a prostitute? Or are her sordid experiences all in her head?

They fit well, are easy to adjust and not too visible under my shirt. But if I was going to the toilet I had to pull my tee off first and then released the two belt loops as loops would be in front of the tee. A little 'I think I can live with the discomfort. I recommend them. They are definitely a bargain.
