Teen dies on day after Saturday boating incident

A 17-year-old boy died Sunday, the result of a boating accident in Whitley County on Saturday.

The accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Shriner Lake, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The 17-year-old – whose identity has not been released – and a 15-year-old girl were riding a personal watercraft, with the boy driving.

They were traveling west across the lake, cutting across waves created by other boats, when at some point both were thrown from the personal watercraft. The boy became unresponsive while in the water, according to the release.

The girl signaled other boaters, who stopped to help. The boy was pulled from the water and taken to shore on the east side of the lake, while another boater called 911 and requested medical assistance, according to the release.

The boy was taken to Parkview Whitley Hospital, then transferred to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He died Sunday, according to the release.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday, but official results have not been released.

The release said the cause of death has yet to be determined and that more testing is pending.

The accident remains under investigation by the Department of Natural Resources and the Allen County Coroner's Office.

Officials fear new law will deter efforts to keep boaters safe ...

RICHMOND, IN (AP) - The absence of a law requiring children to wear life jackets while in boats is drawing fire from conservation officers, who say the omission makes it harder to keep boaters safe.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is partnering with the National Safe Boating Council and the Coast Guard this summer for a campaign to increase life-jacket use in Indiana waters. "WEAR IT INDIANA" aims to encourage the use of personal flotation devices while boaters and swimmers are in the water.

The Palladium-Item reports Indiana had 13 boating fatalities and 30 injuries in 2009. At least two children have drowned since August 2009 because they weren't wearing life jackets or the devices weren't properly fastened.
