Rev up the old tractor
CORNWALL — Technological improvements and additions to motor racing aren't limited to the professional ranks.
Take for example the Cornwall Karting Club when it runs its events every Tuesday evening at the Cornwall Motor Speedway.
Alongside the go-carts there is a growing number of souped-up lawn tractor machines.
"It's pretty impressive," said long-time speedway marketing and announcer Brian Mulligan.
Karting Club president Andre Poulet welcomes the lawn tractors, as it gives another reason for the casual racing fan to show up for a night of motor sports.
"We had them out once last year to try it out," Poulet said, and the experience got the thumbs up from speedway owner Ron Morin.
The 18 or so drivers – mostly young adults – had been getting together tooling around with their lawn tractors at a makeshift tract near Monkland, Mulligan said.
"It looks pretty good," he said of its future, following increasing popularity south of the border.
"They can go up to 30-40 miles per hour, although they can't get up to that speed on (the Karting track)," Poulet said.
Lawn tractors usually require some modifications to convert them from a stock mower to a racing vehicle.
The lawn tractors don't run every Tuesday, but every second week, when their races take turns with the karts, he said.
The Karting club is also evolving mechanically, which may attract more riders.
There are a couple of go-carts which are now gas-powered, Poulet said.
"The kart engines (until now) have been running on alcohol, which can cost $1,000-$1,500 for a complete motor.
"With a complete (gas) engine it will cost $450, and there's a lot less maintenance," he said, noting an alcohol-combustion engine needs an overhaul after about 15 races, but a gas-powered motor can last about two years.
"It's very cost-effective," he said, and could make it easier for new riders to enter the sport, which can cost up to $10,000 for all the accessories.
Filling up the tank will also cost less, as alcohol fuel goes for about $6-7 per gallon and consumption is about double that of gasoline.
While drivers consider switching to gas, the kart track is also being upgraded.
"(Wednesday) we're ripping out the wall, and putting up a whole, new wall," Poulet said.
"It's for safety reasons; a few kids ran into wall the last two weeks, and the wall was so old, they were demolishing it," he said.
