A pile of stuffed animals, a Strong Vincent High School football jersey and a framed picture of a cross rested on and around a green metal pole holding signs announcing parking rules on Wallace Street and the presence of a watch group in the neighborhood.
The collection of items, some held in place with wire and others covered in plastic, sat near the spot at the intersection of East 10th and Wallace streets where a few neighbors had tried to resuscitate a 6-year-old boy who was knocked under the wheels of a transport van as he rode his bicycle through the intersection on Tuesday afternoon.
Jolisha Lewis would be pronounced dead at UPMC Hamot less than 40 minutes later, the victim of an accident Erie police were still trying to sort out on Wednesday.
An autopsy conducted by Erie County Forensic Pathologist Eric Vey on Wednesday morning determined that Lewis had died of blunt force trauma to the head, Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said.
Cook ruled the death as accidental.
Erie police traffic investigators working the case said they were still interviewing witnesses on Wednesday, and would re-examine the transport van in an effort to confirm the direction Lewis was heading when he attempted to cross in front of the van at about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Investigators said they believe Lewis and his older brother, who was riding a scooter, were heading east in the 400 block of East 10th Street when the older boy darted in front of the 2009 Ford F-350 van, which was heading south on Wallace and preparing to stop at the intersection, Erie police Sgt. Jeff Annunziata said.
But some people who were in the area at the time of the crash said they believed the boys were heading west, from their home on the east side of the intersection, said Annunziata, who is investigating the accident with Erie police Patrolman Jason Weismiller.
Annunziata said the driver of the van, identified as 53-year-old Robert Wykoff, of Erie, said he saw the older boy and hit the brake. But he said he did not see Lewis, who was hit by the front of the van and knocked under it, Annunziata said.
The van was "almost stopped" when it hit Lewis, Annunziata said. Lewis was not wearing a helmet, he said.
The accident occurred several feet north of the stop sign, which sits south of the crosswalk on Wallace Street.
The van is owned by the Barber National Institute , and Wykoff was taking home adults who had attended day programs at the facility, said Mary Cuneo, the institute's public relations manager.
