A Parent's Guide to Teacher Gifts
How many apples can a teacher eat?
The school year is drawing to a close and parents are trying to come up with thoughtful and clever tokens of appreciation to give to their children’s teachers.
Teachers are bracing themselves for the onslaught of apple-themed gifts—not that they are complaining, mind you. All gifts are appreciated, many teachers I spoke with assured me.
But, as a teacher friend told me, “the knick-knack gifts are tough to find a place for.”
“I never wanted to throw away a gift a family got me, but you only have so much space on your desk,” she said.
This week, as you prepare for the end of the school year, I asked local parents and teachers about teacher appreciation gifts that are a big hit.
Hands down, the most recommended teacher gift was a gift card. Teachers told me you really can’t go wrong, and any amount is appreciated.
Particularly desirable gift cards are from Target , Starbucks , Costco , iTunes, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble Booksellers.
Items made by your children, especially drawings, pictures and thank you notes are also always appreciated. Many teachers told me they cherished those gifts many years later.
Thoughtfulness makes a big impression.
Amy Dennis of Danville says she bought a vase and put fresh flowers in it each Monday for the last six weeks of her son’s preschool term.
She says teachers loved the simple and inexpensive gift that brightened their classroom and let them know they were thought of during the week.
Marlene Chacon of Danville agrees that thoughtful touches were what she most appreciated as a kindergarten and pre-school teacher. When parents would randomly bring her a coffee she says that was “super!”
If you want to go bigger, themed gifts or baskets that correspond to the teacher’s interests are well received.
A friend shared with me that her brother, a math teacher, is a big baseball fan, and he loved getting Oakland As or Giants gift cards.
Chacon says a favorite of hers was a movie-themed basket which included movie tickets, popcorn and candy.
“Splurge” items, such as event tickets, manicure, pedicure and spa treatment gift cards were also great, she says.
But, remember it is always good to know your teacher.
If they are trying to lose weight, avoid foodie gifts, for example. Pay attention to details such as if they actually drink wine or coffee.

Tattoo artists have a saying: "Good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good." If you're considering getting a tattoo, look for the best artist, not the best price, because it will cost you much more to remove a bad tattoo than it will to get
