The weapon of ideology to fight terrorism

Why lambast Pakistan?

Why criticise the Pakistan army and religious fanatics?

Why can’t you offer some solutions to fix the grave security situation responsible for our economic turmoil?

We sacrificed our citizens, sports, tourism, hotel industries and foreign direct investment etcetera so why highlight Pakistan’s problems rather than offering solutions?

Above stated are questions I have faced over the past few years, during my conversation with Pakistanis across the world. In this blog, I have tried to analyse these questions and also tried to highlight solutions to terrorism  (‘public enemy number two’ after inflation).

Just as a doctor needs to make a proper diagnosis before starting any treatment, we need to understand the source of the problem first. In Pakistan, there has never been a proper diagnosis, and wrong policies have been implemented to counter this terrorism.

How can we fight this issue when the majority in the country believes that terrorism in Pakistan is jointly supported by India, America and Israel? When most Pakistanis consider  Osama bin Laden’s death as a bad thing ; when the majority regards  India as a bigger threat than Taliban and al Qaeda ; when the media is dominated by conspiracy theories of Hamid Gul, Zaid Hamid and Imran Khan.

So, is terrorism a Jewish conspiracy or is it the deeds of Muslims who are influenced by a radical fundamentalist ideology that justifies taking innocent civilians in the name of religion?

It’s high time for Pakistanis to take their pick as their decision will drive the solution to their problems.

Now, I am not going to refute the claims of Zaid Hamid & Co, since they are well  documented already . Instead, I will try to provide a solution to the menace of terrorism that I believe is indeed influenced by a radical ideology and is not a conspiracy of India, America, KFC or McDonalds.

War of ideologies not bombs

It is important to understand that terrorism is an ideological indoctrination which is why military/counter terror operations, drone attacks, reconnaissance missions and other combat operations are only short term solutions.

It is essential to get familiar with the ground realities of this war with an enemy that believes in a violent ideology. We are not fighting people who are influenced by nationalism and where peace will be achieved once the territorial issues are resolved neither are we fighting against a bunch of robbers or thugs. We are fighting against those who wish to establish their caliphate and puritanical Shariah across the globe by means of violent measures.

Just as an example, this may be an anomaly, but I know this Australian Indian citizen, who has recently bought 2 houses in the LA Valley and is having no issues filling them with contractors so far (1 my friend), even in this economy. He works on SAP projects traveling on H1 , but is in Aussie land most of the time, with his family. The rent more than pays off his mortgage. to buy another house (if it is not distress property / from auction) just to put it on rent is stupidity ..risk is good if it is calculated ..to take foolish risk is foolishness ..anyway that is me. In this Country land is virtually unlimited !!! demand is low (see immigration ..they give majority GC's to people when they are 50 - 60 years old) and those who are young have smaller families because of high cost of living, way of living. The recent visit by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao clearly had a productive focus - SinoIndian economic ties have been re-enforced, and there has been an effort to re-balance the trading relationship. This Brief uses irony to communicate five propositions (i.e. the intended meaning of these five statements is the opposite of what is stated), that can be found in several discourses on Sino-Indian ties. It evaluates these propositions in the light of the tangible and intangible gains from Premier Wen Jiabao’s second official visit to India. How do you weigh a visit by a foreign Head of State or Government – one that prods a relationship in an incremental way versus one that promises a turnaround from a low baseline? The political and strategic dimension of the India-US partnership received an immense boost with Obama’s visit, and so did the economy. However, with Wen Jiaobao’s visit, India and China have prepared the ground for what hopefully shapes up to be a balanced economic and a healthy political partnership. If Premier Wen has second-placed talk of India and China being rivals – surely the political gains are waiting to be realized. Incidentally, the MoUs signed during Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit are worth $16 billion (against $10 billion worth of agreements signed during the Obama visit). Re-balancing of the Indian deficit (roughly USD 20 billion) from its trade with China has been promised through enhanced trade facilitation in the pharma and IT/Engineering sectors, a proposed CEO’s forum, more openness to Indian agro products, greater presence in Chinese trade fairs, and the desire for a strategic economic partnership.
