IMHOTEP: Remarkable women

I have been deeply saddened by the recent passing of two remarkable women. Albertina Sisulu, widow of South African anti-Apartheid hero, Walter Sisulu, passed away on June 2. She was interred beside the tomb of her late husband on June 11. Our own Lady of Songs, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, passed away on the 30th of last month. Both were remarkable women, impacting their generations in very profound ways.

Born on October 21, 1918, Nontsikelelo Albertina Thethiwe was known throughout her life as Ma Sisulu after she married the love of her life, Walter Sisulu. When the young Walter proposed marriage to her after a brief courtship, she told him she had given birth to four children at her parents' home. To her surprise, the young man was not dissuaded by the story which she had made up to discourage him. He had graciously asked if he could be allowed to play a part in bringing up the children as her husband.

It was a marriage made in heaven. But they were not only married to each other; they were married to the Movement. While her husband languished in Robben Island for 25 years, the lot fell on her to raise their five children. She was one of the founder-leaders of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and a fiery fighter in the trenches. A nurse and social worker, she brought a mother's instincts to everything she did and was much beloved throughout the ANC.

Remarkably, when she got married to Walter in 1944, Nelson Mandela was the best man. It was she and her husband that took on board the rustic royal prince from the Transkei and literally made him into a leader. Mandela himself confessed that there was no major decision he ever made in life that did not involve consultation with Walter Sisulu. This includes his harrowingly painful decision to divorce Winnie Madikizela and his decision to marry Graça Machel. Walter and Albertina were perhaps the only couple that Madiba would defer to in real life.

Indeed, one of the few occasions on which Mandela is known to have publicly succumbed to tears was at Sisulu's funeral in May 2003. "Xhamela is no more", he wept. "May he live forever; a part of me is gone....By ancestry, I was born to rule. Xhamela helped me understand that my real vocation was to be a servant of the people."

The passing of her husband was obviously a shattering blow. Too weak to speak at his funeral, their granddaughter had to read the eulogy on her behalf: "Walter, what do I do without you? It was for you I woke up in the morning, it was for you I lived...
