Summit area clergy engage in building, barbeque, blessings at Habitat site

On Wednesday, June 15, Morris Habitat was host to an Interfaith & Community build at 39 Morris Ave., Summit, for a day filled with building, barbeque and blessings.

Kicking off the build day, with heartfelt devotion, was Rabbi Avi Friedman of the Jewish Community Center. In his speech, Rabbi Friedman commented on how truly blessed the six partner families are, to have such remarkable volunteers who donate their time and resources to provide hardworking families in need with affordable housing.

As the building began, it was clear to see that fellowship and partnership were the themes of the day. Throughout the morning, these mighty volunteers installed stucco; hung doors on each of the homeowners’ condos; and applied the final stages of the roof trusses.

Participating congregations included the Unitarian Church in Summit, Christ Church, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fountain Baptist Church, Calvary Episcopal Church, Fountain Baptist Church, Summit Jewish Community Center and the Religious Society of Friends. Thanks to the congregations, and to many others, the 39 Morris Avenue project has become a nearly completed home that will provide shelter for six families in need.

As a result of this build day, participating congregations were able to raise awareness of the growing need for affordable housing in Morris County and also help to raise much-needed funds to complete the six units.

To date, Morris Habitat has built or rehabilitated 48 homes in the Morris area. Habitat’s philosophy is to provide a “hand up” with Habitat families working alongside volunteers to build their own homes. It means that no one wants to live there. In most cases, the homes (1) aren’t finished, (2) have been destroyed, or (3) are in blighted neighborhoods.

You have to be very careful with such houses. In some regions — Detroit comes to mind — neighborhoods with “a lot” of such homes are going to end up on the demolition list some day in the not so distant future.

It also could be a come on — a scam of some kind. Good housing in even the most difficult real estate markets will usually sell for at least land + rental value. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
