People unite to clean up city
Danville - Several people have teamed up on Tuesday morning in an effort to clean the outbreak city of Danville.
The group of nearly 10 volunteers - dubbed the cleaning crew to Danville on his Facebook page - met for the first time Tuesday noon in the parking lot at North Bowman Avenue and East Fairchild Street.
Sat Garza, the organizer of the group, said the idea of the team came as he was driving through Danville.
"I took my girlfriend to work day and on the way home I went to see this trash all over Jackson down the street," he said Tuesday before cleaning.
"I thought that something must be done," he added.
The group - armed with gloves, bags and other tools - struck down Bowman Avenue and Fairchild Street.
Carol Ivy Danville was among the volunteers who attended a hand to clean the afternoon. A native of Danville, Ivy returned to the city last year after living in Florida for a number of years.
"My motivation is to clean the city," she said. "I see the plastic, garbage, trash, glass, litter throughout the city and I'm sick of it"
She called the trash "unacceptable".
Garza called the first meeting of the cleaning crew Danville "spur of the moment." But he noted people can meet by cleaning Danville team site Facebook and set up their own cleanup projects throughout the city.
"It's something to promote and keep our city clean," he said.
About 175 people have "loved" the page on Tuesday afternoon.
Garza cousin Chad Alvarez was also on the street willing to help on Tuesday. With a day off, he said he decided to donate time to the cleanup effort.
It does not take much for each city resident to help the effort.
"Just go out and up and down the front of your garden, your block," he said. "If there is trash there to help pick it up. Fifteen minutes of your day and you can clean one of your blocks.
"Everyone treats it like Danville died and I think we need to breathe some life back into it and clean it," he added.
