The Terminal Tower train station was our entry to a new life: Cleveland Remembers

Euclid Avenue holds a lot of good memories for me...in 1958 it saw me and my mother disembark from a train in Terminal Tower from New York emigrating to Cleveland. In 1961, I worked for Danford-Lowell, a jewelry company across the street from Cowell & Hubbard jewelers.

I then upgraded to a data processing job in Public Square but I always enjoyed the smell of peanuts, the police officer who directed traffic and acted like he was a clown in the circus, the many shops. I remember someone opening our glass door to the jewelers shop and yelling PRESIDENT KENNEDY JUST GOT SHOT and we all going to the back of the store to listen on the radio.

Judging from a particular memory I keep hearing expressed on this site, I see a fantastic business opportunity for some budding entrepreneur that would not even involve a huge up-front cash outlay. Somebody needs to revive Morrow's Nut House. For many people this may be just nostalgia fluff - I still feel an aching heart when I pass by Ontario without that wonderful aroma in the air - but Morrow's did do a good business, didn't they? And aren't nuts supposed to be good for you?

I'm too young to remember Morrow's, I guess, but I did have an aunt who worked downtown at May Co. For gift-giving occasions, she would often give me a box of the biggest cashews I have ever seen in my life. Wouldn't surprise me if they came from Morrow's, although she never did say. Since my aunt passed away, I've never seen cashews anywhere near that big, or tasty, since. Not even from Malley's, whose cashews are excellent, too.

Chef Zachary Bruell to Open New Restaurant in Downtown Theater ...

Chef Zachary Bruell is adding to his restaurant portfolio, with the planned opening of Cowell & Hubbard Co. in October 2011 at 1305 Euclid Ave. near East 13th Street. Bruell decided to name the eatery after the famed jewelry store that moved into the building in 1920.

Cowell & Hubbard Co. will serve American interpretations of modern French cuisine. Bruell says that he hasn't yet decided on the price points, but said they will be similar to the "reasonably priced" items at his other restaurants, which include Parallax in Tremont, L'Albatros in University Circle, Chinato on East Fourth St., and Table 45 at InterContinental Cleveland Hotel.

Playhouse officials approached Bruell earlier this year in January, but at the time he had told them that he was not ready to open another restaurant. However, Bruell changed his mind in March and decided to do it.

Bruell believes that his business will benefit from the theater district, which draws 1 million visitors per year. The Horseshoe Casino Cleveland, which is scheduled to open in 2012 at the old Higbee Building, is also expected to positively effect his restaurant, as well as those of others downtown.

When the 6,500-square-foot restaurant opens, Bruell will employ 200 people spread out amongst his restaurants, which doesn't include Table 45 as he doesn't own it and is just the chef there. He anticipates hiring staff for Cowell & Hubbard Co. in late September.

Andy Dombrowski, who is the executive chef at L'Albatros and Chinato, will assist Bruell in opening the new restaurant.
