Monday Niblicks: Bubba in Paris & Tiger's pursuits
Happy Fourth of July from the Niblicks crew, otherwise known as the “Army of One.” Also hoping Bubba Watson is in a happy place this holiday, now that he’s back on this side of the Atlantic.
Though it wasn’t exactly a slow news week, the adventures of Bubba in Paris certainly rank as the most eyebrow-raising. In just two French Open rounds – he missed the cut after scores of 74-74 – Watson managed to leave a trail of oddities and unpleasantness that included…
• Griping over organization, particularly fans with camera phones. “I don’t know which holes to walk through,” he said. “There’s no ropes. It’s something I’m not used to.”
• Described the Eiffel Tower as “that big tower,” the Arc de Triomphe as “this arch I drove around in a circle” and the Louvre as “a building starting with L.”
• Refused to share a courtesy car for the short ride back to his hotel.
Bubba just being Bubba? Sure. Watson always has marched to the beat of his own drummer. The goofball side can be charming. The unpleasant side, not so much.
But in his first foray outside the PGA Tour or the British Open, Watson had to know the curiosity factor would create a somewhat bigger spotlight. The Panhandle lug has won twice this year and has more shots in his bag than most threesomes on tour combined.
One also has to wonder where Watson’s wife, Angie, was in all this. The former Angie Ball is a former basketballer who once played professionally in … wait for it … France.
Watson, who apologized after his departure, will recharge his batteries for a few days stateside, then head back across the Pond for the British Open – where he has two MCs in two visits. C’est la vie.
And in other corners of the golf weekend…
• Good to see Tiger Woods without crutches or that walking boot at the AT&T National, but he’s in a serious beat-the-clock race if he’s going to tee it up at the British Open. Here’s a hunch that the eventual answer is “Not yet.”
We take note, too, of two Tiger developments off the course. Woods’ first post-scandal endorsement deal goes overseas, with the Japanese heat rub Kowa. Not sure if it speeds knee healing. And we have a Buffalo News report that “blood spinning” doctor Anthony Galea – who helped Woods through previous knee woes – has a Wednesday court appearance to reportedly accept a plea deal. He’s currently charged with trying to smuggle HGH across the border.
