Teens honor dad by fighting for cancer research
Are your typical 13-year-olds. They will soon begin eighth grade at South Miami Middle School where Justin plays violin in the orchestra and Gabriel plays trumpet in the band. They love football, basketball and lacrosse, and hanging out with their friends. What they didn’t expect at this time in their lives was that their dad would get sick. Carlos Telleria passed away in May after a 13-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
The twins wanted to do something to help, so when school was out they went to Washington, D.C. Along with their mother, , dean of students at the University of Miami School of Law, they participated in the Fifth Annual Advocacy Day for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCan).
“I was so sad when my dad died of cancer, and I don’t want other kids to go through that,” Gabriel said.
“It was very cool to go to D.C. to lobby Congress for such a good cause. We hope we made a difference,” said Justin.
More than 500 people from all 50 states joined the family at Advocacy Day. These included 70 survivors of pancreatic cancer and many families who have been directly touched by the disease. Congresswoman , the writer of “The Last Lecture.” Both men died young of pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer is listed as the fourth most common cause of death from cancer. It is the only cancer with a five-year survival rate still in the single digits, said the twins’ mom Stearns. “We were in D.C. lobbying for the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act which is part of a strategy to try to double the survival rate to 12 percent by 2020.”

The only suspect ever arrested in connection with the murders, James “Jimmy” Hughes, walked out of jail a year ago after Deputy Attorney General Michael Murphy suddenly dropped the case in light of new evidence that was never disclosed.

Miami-based attorney Leonard Elliot Mondschein, chair of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar, said such cases are rare but inevitably happen even if they aren't reported. “Whenever somebody in a position of trust has access to somebody's money or

When Dorohn Frazier begins his day as a public information coordinator for The Florida Bar, he’s thankful not only for his first paying job that accommodates his disability, he’s grateful to five state attorneys who make it all possible. State attorneys in the Fourth, 11th, 13th, 15th, and 17th judicial circuits all participate in the Tax Collection Enforcement Diversion Program that collects unremitted sales tax from delinquent business owners. Half of what those state attorneys collect goes to the James Patrick Memorial Work Incentive Personal Attendant Services Program, and the other half goes into the state’s general revenue fund. “I think this program is really beneficial to young professionals with disabilities, who are hardworking and desire to be productive in the workplace,” Frazier said. “The program reduces the size of a large barrier and gives us hope that we can achieve meaningful employment and improve the quality of our lives, just like anyone else.”

21 VIE FOR VACANT PALM BEACH JUDGESHIP – The Palm Beach Post, http://www.palmbeachpost.com , June 27, 2011. A small billboard on State Road 60 near Lake Wales bringing attention to what the sign’s owner calls “the alimony lottery.” The 4-foot-by-8-foot sign, which Steve Hoye erected last year on his property about a mile west of U.S. 27, broadcasts the message: “STOP PERMANENT ALIMONY.” It provides contact information for Florida Alimony Reform Inc., a group that promotes changes to the state’s alimony laws. The group criticizes Florida’s alimony system on multiple points and seeks new laws that would set stricter guidelines for alimony awards, set a maximum percentage of income to be paid, reduce the discretion of judges and end lifetime alimony obligations. The Florida Legislature in the 2011 session passed a law forbidding alimony terms in which the recipient’s net income significantly exceeds the payer’s. The law, incorporating a bill filed in the Florida House by Rep. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, also expands the range of factors family law judges may consider in setting alimony terms. Hoye said he appreciates the intentions behind the new law, but he said the language is too vague to have much real effect.
HAITIANS GET A HOW-TO-LESSON ON IMMIGRATION – The News-Press, http://www.news-press.com , June 27, 2011. The ruling, so far, applies only to convicted murderer Paul H. Evans, and runs contrary to decisions by other judges in other courtrooms. U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez upheld the Evans conviction, but ordered he receive a new sentencing hearing. Martinez said Florida’s death penalty statutes are unconstitutional because jurors aren’t required to make specific findings on what factors led them to recommend a punishment of death over life imprisonment. And because jurors only make a recommendation, the ultimate decision is left to the judge. Charles Rose, a professor at Stetson University College of Law and director of its Center for Excellence in Advocacy, said Martinez’s opinion doesn’t set any precedents, only casting “a different opinion in interpreting the [death penalty] statute.” However, Rose said Martinez’s ruling and reasoning will be cited in future and pending cases. The Florida Legislature, Rose said, would be wise to tweak state law to head off those challenges.
