Summer pet care tips

Summer weather, family vacations and outdoor activities can often affect the family cat or dog. Here are some tips from the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association to help keep pets safe and healthy from the Fourth of July to Labor Day.

Do dogs and cats get sunburn?

Some dogs get sunburn. Like fair-skinned people, white-haired dogs are sensitive to sun exposure. White cats and those that have white ears and noses are very susceptible to sunburn, so it is important to keep cats and dogs inside more on extremely sunny days and to talk to a veterinarian about the occasional use of sunscreen.

Can I bring my dog to a picnic or barbecue?

While it is fine to take a dog to a picnic or barbecue, keep it away from greasy or fat-laden food that can upset its stomach or trigger pancreatitis or colitis. A corn cob can cause blockages, and a skewer can puncture the intestine.

Can I take my dog swimming?

Not all dogs are good swimmers. Short-legged dogs, such as Corgis, are usually poor swimmers, but most dogs with long legs, such as Labrador retrievers, swim quite well. It is important not to take a dog swimming anyplace dangerous, where the current is too swift, the boat traffic too busy, or where if something went wrong you would both be in danger of drowning. Don’t forget to rinse pets off, even if they were just in a lake or pool. Life jackets are available for dogs that go boating.

How can I keep my dog calm during a thunderstorm?

Many dogs are afraid of loud noises such as thunder and fireworks. Some dogs just need reassurance, but others get too upset to be calmed with a few soft words and some petting. If the dog is very afraid, talk to a veterinarian, who may prescribe medication or suggest behavior modification or training tips.

Can dogs and cats get heat stroke?

Absolutely. Never leave a pet in the car with the windows rolled up. On very hot days, don't lock a pet in the garage. Dogs and cats are just as vulnerable to the heat as children and need to have plenty of water available and a cool place to rest. On hot days, take it easy with a pet: play less, run less and cool off more often.

What does a pet need to travel in the car?

Cats should travel in a carrier, both for their safety and the driver’s. Consider having a dog wear a seatbelt harness. Both dogs and cats should have collars with identification tags; consider permanent identification such as a microchip. For a car trip, pack fresh water, the pet’s regular food and bowls, and any medications they take. Medical records, including vaccination records, should be brought along in case the pet needs to be boarded or taken to a veterinary hospital in an emergency. Consider carrying a recent photo in case the pet gets lost.

Westie people only please: How long to run the dog at a time and in one day?

I have a West Highland White Terrier (Westie). He 11 year old very healthy, muscular and strong.
