USPS to examine Jenks' ZIP code issue

The United States Postal Service, in response to concerns from the city of Jenks and Jenks residents, is conducting a survey of residents living in Jenks city limits who have a Sapulpa, Bixby and Tulsa addresses.

Those residents with the ZIP codes of these areas could make the switch to the 74037, Jenks’ ZIP code.

According to Jenks City Manager Mike Tinker, the USPS will be conducting an official boundary review process via mail in the coming weeks.

“We’ve been looking at this issue for over five years, but have been working on this process the past 14 months,” Tinker said.

According to Tinker, the most pressing reason to “purify” the ZIP code is to address public safety concerns and potential delays in response times.

In a March 2011 letter to the USPS, then- Jenks Police Chief Don Selle called the current situation “reason for concern.”

“Residents of Jenks on the southern and western boundaries live in an area where four municipalities converge,” Selle wrote. “Jenks residents with addresses that identify their location as outside Jenks city limits face a threat of confusion when emergency personnel are dispatched.”

Selle added that ensuring the correct agency is notified in an emergency situation places “extra pressure” on emergency dispatchers.

Fire Chief Gary Friedel, in a letter to the USPS, noted the importance of a timely response in emergency calls.

“The single most important factor in survival rates in medical emergency situations is the response time of emergency personnel,” he wrote. “The one factor they (dispatchers) cannot control is how well the person who dials 911 can explain their location.”

City planner Robert Bell noted that Jenks City Council has been pushing the issue for some time.

“This is important for a number of reasons,” Bell said. “We can’t thank the postal service enough for responding to the concerns of Jenks residents on this issue.”

Bell said issues as simple as picking up certified mail can be cumbersome to residents living in the Sapulpa, Tulsa and Bixby ZIP codes.

“If you’ve received a certified letter in the mail, and you happen to live in these areas, you would have to go to Sapulpa or to Tulsa or to Bixby to pick up your mail,” he said. “Even something as simple as using your GPS becomes difficult in these areas because you live in Jenks but have a Sapulpa address. Therefore, the GPS won’t recognize your address unless you tell the system you live in one of those other cities.
