‘Photocrati Fund' Photography Grant Competition Awards $5000 to Paul ColangeloPhotocrati Media, a leading provider of photography website templates, names Paul Colangelo as the 2011 Photocrati Fund Fellow, recipient of a $5000 grant for his project Surviving Todagin.
Boulder, CO (PRWEB) July 02, 2011
Photocrati Media named Vancouver-based environmental photographer Paul Colangelo as the 2011 Photocrati Fund Fellow in early June. For his project, Surviving Todagin, Colangelo will lead a four-month-long expedition on Togadin Mountain in the Sacred Headwaters region of British Columbia (June-Sept. 2011) to document the unfolding story of the conflict between development, conservation and livelihoods.
Surviving Togadin, part of Colangelo's Sacred Headwaters, Sacred Journey project, focuses on the world's largest herd of Stone sheep, their endangered habitat and the Tahltan First Nations people who depend on these animals. The expedition team includes Colangelo, Dr. Wes Sechrest from Global Wildlife Residence, and Dr. Wade Davis, National Geographic Explorer in Residence.
“We are excited to support Paul's important work in the Sacred Headwaters region,” said Erick Danzer, president and founder of Photocrati Media. “This is a project that we know will have significant impact.”
Colangelo's project was selected from a pool of more than 400 applicants by the 2011 Photocrati Fund juror panel which included some of the world's premier environmental and humanitarian photographers: Jim Brandenburg, Michael “Nick” Nichols, and Steve McCurry.
“I'm honored to receive a grant judged by such iconic photographers who I've always looked up to,” said Colangelo. “Photocrati's support will help get the Surviving Todagin project underway and will be put to use immediately to fly to the mountain and establish a base camp.”
The top finishers were recognized at the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, VA in early June. “This was an extremely competitive year,” said Danzer. “We wish that we had more grants to give to support more of this amazing work.”
Second Place was awarded to Robin Hammond for his on-going project Still Human – Mental Health in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Struggle for Dignity, which documents the shocking care conditions for mental health patients. Matt Eich was awarded Third Place for his project Sin & Salvation in Baptist Town, an intimate documentary of the complicated legacies of racism and class disparities in a Mississippi Delta town. Honorable Mentions included: Anna Boyiazis AIDS Orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa; Stacy Kranitz The Island – Isle de Jean Charles, Louisiana; Ivo Viktorov Danchev Saker Falcon Conservation in Central Asia; Wendy Marijnissen Every Woman Counts; Alex Masi War Defects: The Fallujah Legacy; Thomas Edwin Stanworth An Uncommon Faith; Sebastian Liste Vicario Sugar Cane, Slave Work, and Andrew Harrington Living with Lions.
