BLAZING fires are becoming blazing harder to fuel as firewood becomes an increasingly scarce commodity in the wake of summer floods.

Cutting has dropped up to 80 per cent, with regular Riverina harvest areas long out of action due to access problems.

Suppliers are having to travel further for stock and relay higher costs to consumers.

One Geelong district dealer said yesterday any stock that did come in was usually already pre-sold, but industry leaders have assured people they shouldn't be ripping out fireplaces just yet.

"It's like the banana rule they'll come back down and get available again," Firewood Association of Australia public officer Alan McGreevy said.

"Things will hopefully come back to normal."

Prices have risen to $300 a tonne, or two ute loads, for redgum.

Brendan Gleeson of Moolap's Riverina Redgum Firewood Supplies has more than 2000 tonnes of stock sitting in his yard but said he was travelling 200km further to secure wood this year and costs had to be relayed.

"Last year, I finished at $260 a tonne it's gone up considerably but it will drop back down next year," Mr Gleeson said.

"I believe it has to, because I think I'm finding in the past month my sales have plateaued a bit and I suspect that could be to do with the prices.

"It could be the weather, too."

Mr Gleeson said he was one of few operators in action year-round and had been able to buy up ahead of the shortage.

"I'm probably the only yard in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales that would have stockpiles," he said. "I knew it was going to happen.

"I've been doing it for 20 years and I generally stockpile anyway."

Average firewood-heating households consume about three tonnes each winter.

Mr Gleeson estimated his sales had risen 30 per cent in the past decade, but he was unsure if the main factors were more wood fires, fewer people cutting their own fuel or his capacity to handle more stock.
