NPR reports government has stockpile of billion dollars in coins

This undated photo provided by the U.S. Mint shows the front, right, and back of the President John Adams presidential $1 coin. The second dollar coin in the new presidential series goes into circulation around the country on Thursday, May 17, 2007, with the U.S. Mint hoping it can turn 18th century statesman John Adams into a 21st century marketing phenomenon.

If you had more than a billion dollars in coins, would you keep it locked away? Well, that's just what the federal government is doing.

According to a report this week by National Public Radio, the Federal Reserve Bank has more than a billion dollars in $1 coins being kept in vaults, because a government program required their production since 2007, and people still have not come around to using coins in place of dollar bills.

The program was designed to create coins bearing the head of all past U.S. presidents, starting with George Washington. A different president's coin is released each quarter, and the program is on its 18th president, Ulysses S. Grant.

NPR reported that the pile of coins, which cost about $300 million to make, could double by 2016 when the program ends.

In addition to these presidential coins, there are two other $1 coins. One with Susan B. Anthony's likeness and the other with an image of Sacagawea, the teenage Native-American guide to Lewis and Clark.

Some local banks don't even bother ordering these $1 coins.

Calvin Cearley, president and CEO of Palm Beach Community Bank, said he ordered $500 worth of coins about a year ago. There are still some left.

"We hardly have anyone ask for them, but we do have a supply," Cearley said. "We use them strictly as hand-out business development pieces."

He said when he is invited to make speeches, he usually brings some of the coins to pass out with a joke. He tells the recipients it's a lucky coin; one that they should always carry in their pockets and never spend. If they spend it, they'll have bad luck.

"These one-dollar coins (are) a joke," Cearley said. "That's what I use them for."

He said he also gives them to rotary clubs that auction them. The bank's loan officers carry a roll of coins with them.

"It's a door opener for conversation," Cearley said.

He added that the coins are not fit for everyday use because they are heavier than bills, and machines don't take them.

"These dollar coins are not going to be used or accepted by the public," he said. "People like folding money.

I am buying silver bullion proof notes of different denominations. I have been reading about the counterfeit silver bars and would like to educate myself to avoid them. Can anyone point me to a book or forum where I can learn? Thanks.

Unless you want to learn about Collectible coins and precious metal designs, you don’t need a book or online forum or anything else. If you’re only interested in purchasing bulk silver, all you are interested in is buying silver as close as you can get to meltdown value.

You don’t care what the design or “mint” value is, you’re only interested in the weight of the silver. You’ll find that eBay is way overpriced.

That’s why I like Apmex.com. They show you the current price of silver up front, and you can see that you pay a $2 premium or whatever over the meltdown price of the coin or bar.
