Padres draft McNeese State's Orr (6/8)

The San Diego Padres made it a double play Tuesday, making Lee Orr their second draft pick from McNeese State in as many days.

The Padres drafted Orr in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. On Monday, the team drafted Cowboys shortstop Jace Peterson in the compensation round between the first and second rounds.

Orr, a junior outfielder, was drafted in the 40th round by the Cincinnati Reds last season. He boosted his stock by playing with the East Texas Pumpjacks of the Texas Collegiate League last summer. He was most valuable player of the wood bat league, hitting .284 with five homers and 24 stolen bases.

He returned to McNeese, where he hit .322 with eight homers and 54 runs batted in.

“It’s awesome just to get picked again, and even better now that me and Jace will be in the same organization,” said Orr.

Orr said he went later than he expected, but to the team he wanted.

“From everything I heard before the draft, I was projected to get picked anywhere from the fifth to tenth round,” he said. “I did not expect to start falling beneath there. When that happened, I called San Diego to let them know I wanted to sign and waned to play for them. I felt it was the best place for me and it gives me and Jace a chance to tackle the minor leagues together.”

Playing with the Padres first crossed Orr’s mind when he found out they had taken Peterson on Monday night.

“I found out about that after my game with the Pumpjacks,” Orr said. “Before the draft, we had been talking and there were a couple of teams that had shown interest in both of us so we knew there was a chance we could end up with the same team. San Diego had talked to both of us.”

Orr said his performance with the Pumpjacks last summer gives him confidence heading into the professional ranks.

“Hitting homers with the wood bats proved I had big power, and was not just hitting them at McNeese because of the aluminum bats,” he said.

“I like hitting with the wood. I am a big guy, but I have some athleticism, good speed and can play good defense. There are a few things I need to work on, but I am ready to go to work fixing them. Plate discipline is something I need to improve. I need to get better at taking pitches and not striking out so much.”

Orr said he and Peterson are bringing similar tools to the Padres.
