Radio Wimbledon Adapts to the Times
For tennis fans today, there is now the opportunity to watch the action at Wimbledon streaming live online or via multiple channels on their satellite TV or check out 3-D coverage of the final weekend of the tournament.
But amid the barrage of 21st century technology, a 20th century staple is making a name for itself: the radio.
Yes, that old dial-in apparatus that we associate more with F.D.R. and fireside chats is operating in its 20th year at The Championships, giving the tournament another old-world feel.
But Radio Wimbledon has found a way to adapt to the times. The operation exists locally in London on a FM dial and online through the official Wimbledon Web site , where listeners can tune in via an Internet connection to three different channels from anywhere in the world.
“Many people are at work, or not able to watch tennis all day on TV,” Radio Wimbledon Editor Stephen Butterick wrote in an e-mail message. “Radio Wimbledon gives an opportunity to experience the tournament without being there.”
Radio Wimbledon’s commentator Gigi Salmon said it’s an unobstructed view — minus the picture — of the tournament itself.
“For the tennis fans who want uninterrupted match coverage we do ball-by-ball commentary on all the matches on Centre Court and Court 1,” Salmon said in an e-mail message. “The main station dips into the commentaries” — on the main courts — “at various points.” She added, “Otherwise, we go around to all the courts.”
On Wednesday, as the men’s quarterfinals played out in the stadiums, Salmon was covering the Americans Bob and Mike Bryan’s match in doubles on Court 2, which the brothers won, 16-14, in the fifth set .
For many diehard and curious fans, that’s exactly the kind of coverage they want. Butterick explains that listener numbers have been healthy, and they only expect them to grow this year.
“Last year, we had 1.5 million listeners on the Internet and 380,000 listeners on the iPhone application ,” Butterick said of the application’s first year. “Our expectation is that we will easily exceed the number of listeners on the app this year. As a station, we have been able to grow gradually, but also the technology has gone our way. The Internet, the iPhone and Android phones have revitalized radio and provided new audiences on new platforms.
