Alaska trip subject of Harding symposium
Harding Home State Memorial site manage Sherry Hall holds a cribbage board carved by hand from walrus tusk that was given to President Warren G. Harding and First Lady Florence Harding while they were on a tour of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest in the summer of 1923. Such artifacts will be be shown as part of the Warren G. Open house and wine and dessert reception at Marion Union Station, 532 W. Center St.
July 23
9 a.m.-noon
Guided tours of Harding Home and Museum at 380 Mount Vernon Ave., the Harding Tomb at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Vernon Heights Boulevard and Heritage Hall at 169 E. Church St.
1-2:30 p.m.
Study session at Ohio State University at Marion presented by Harding Home site manager Sherry Hall on Harding's journey to the western states, Canada and Alaska and its importance to his presidency.
2:30-4 p.m.
Study session at Ohio State University at Marion by Alaska historian Jim Geraghty on the native customs, natural resources and territorial governance issues of Alaska at the time of the trip.
4-5:30 p.m.
Dr. Richard K. Harding, great-nephew of the president, will present a study session at Ohio State University-Marion on the decline in health and death of Warren G. Harding.
6:30-9 p.m.
Dinner and round table discussion by presenters in the Guthery Room, located in Maynard Hall at the Ohio State University at Marion.
COST/REGISTRATION
The cost of the weekend package is $60 for adults and $40 for students. The Friday reception by itself costs $15, the Saturday study sessions cost $35 and the Saturday dinner and program only cost $25.
Proceeds will go to the Harding Home Restoration Fund.
