Morristown Democratic primary results unchanged following recount
MORRISTOWN — A recount today of the vote totals in the Democratic primary for the 2nd ward seat on the Morristown Council yielded no change in the results, with incumbent Raline Smith-Reid remaining the winner by 21 votes.
Morris County Clerk Joan Bramhall announced the results of this morning’s recount, which kept the totals at 196 votes for Smith-Reid, compared with 175 for her challenger, Toshiba Foster.
The recount checked voting machine totals, absentee ballots and provisional ballots, and none of the results changed, Bramhall said.
Smith-Reid will face Republican Naveen Nadipuram in the November election.
Foster had challenged the results on grounds that some people “no longer live” in the district where they voted, and because some machines showed vote totals that differed from the number of people who signed in to vote, according to her attorney, Sharon Weiner.
Weiner said she is considering filing a formal "election contest" challenging the results. Foster isn't prepared to concede because there are "too many irregularities," Weiner said.
Smith-Reid's attorney, Paul Bangiola, said the allegations are false. Foster's election challengers could have questioned voters' residency at the polls, but didn't, he pointed out.
With just two provisional ballots cast, Bangiola said, Foster has little chance of making up the 21-vote gap.
"It's time to be gracious and concede," Bangiola said, claiming that Mayor Timothy Dougherty is behind the challenge because Smith-Reid supported his opponent, former Mayor Donald Cresitello, in the mayoral election.
Dougherty, in a statement, denied a political motivation in the election challenge. "The only one keeping the Dougherty against Cresitello debate alive is Bangiola," Dougherty said.
