Farmer's market opens in Shenandoah

One of the joys of summer is savoring locally grown produce, and local farmers' markets bring the tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, corn, potatoes, apples, blueberries and a host of other items fresh-picked from area farms.

Shenandoah launched its farmers market on Friday, and even though early in the season, the three farm stands, along with a bakery, had a varied selection of goods - most grown in Schuylkill and regional counties. The farmers market is held Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon on the unit block of South Main Street.

Agnes Ferguson of Shenandoah checked out the different stands, including Klinger's Farms of Catawissa.

"I come for the fresh vegetables and fruit," said Ferguson, who loves getting the produce fresh off the farm. "I come here every week from the beginning until the market ends."

Lois Klinger and her daughter-in-law, Becky Klinger, had lots of customers at their stand for the first day.

"I've been here for years," said Lois Klinger. "I've been coming here since the days when the market was on Lloyd Street. That's probably about 35 years. We also go to Mahanoy City and Mount Carmel."

The local produce at the Klinger stand included cucumbers, zucchini and cabbage, along with green beans, which are from the Sunbury area. A table filled with containers of fresh blueberries also drew customers.

"We have to go with what we can dig up since it's early," said Klinger. "We'll have orchards, so we'll have peaches, plums and apples. Later we'll have cantaloupes, seedless watermelons, potatoes. We're behind about two to three weeks because the weather was so cool and wet."

Donna Helwig of Helwig Farms, also of Catawissa, is a regular in Shenandoah over the years. She had the early cabbage, onions and lettuce from the farm, and as the summer progresses, there will be potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, peaches, nectarines and more. The poor spring weather had delayed Helwig's plantings, too.

She also attends the Mount Carmel farmers market, along with going door-to-door in Mount Carmel, Kulpmont and Atlas.

"We go door-to-door every other week during the winter in Shenandoah," said Helwig's husband, Robert Petro.
