Balboa Park museums offer cool kid-friendly funBy Emily Sorensen
Looking for something to keep the kids occupied now that school is out? Balboa Park has lots of entertainment and education to offer families on a budget this summer.
Keeping the kids entertained in the summer can be a chore, and when the local park or the beach isn’t enough, here are some great events and exhibits to bring the kids to (and not empty your wallet at the same time).
The San Diego Natural History Museum is currently exhibiting “Ends of the Earth: Polar Bears and Penguins,” an exhibit exploring the polar regions of the Earth. Kids can learn hands-on about how the animals of these regions survive and adapt, and even put on a penguin suit and slide like one. The museum also offers “Wahoo! Wacky Science Sundays with Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus,” every Sunday from 12:15 – 2:15 p.m., and “Nature and Me Storytime,” every second Tuesday of the month at 10:15 a.m., recommended for ages 1-5. Both are free with museum admission.
There are many fun things for kids to learn and explore with at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, including “Kid City,” a special area for kids 5 and under where they can climb, play and learn with a fire engine, a ball wall, a little learner’s science lab and a special area for infants. The Science Center also offers the Exploration Bar, and area with interactive demonstration and exploration on electricity, light, magnetism and more, as well as “Block Busters,” where visitors can use KEVA planks to build towers, spirals and more.
The San Diego Air and Space Museum has recently opened the “Kid’s Aviation Action Hangar,” an area where kids of all ages can enjoy magnetic toys, coloring books and flight simulators in a real wind tunnel environment. The museum also offers fun 3-D and 4-D movies in the Zable Theater, including “Fly Me to the Moon,” and “Jetpack Adventure,” which are animated and family-friendly.
If you’ve got a child who loves trains, then the San Diego Model Train Museum might be right up your alley. The museum offers many displays of model trains, including an interactive Lionel train set with displays at a kid’s-eye level. Also available is a Thomas the Tank Engine playroom with two new Thomas track layouts to play with. Admission to the Model Train Museum is only $7 for adults and children under 15 are free.
