Guest Post: A Brief Tourists Guide to London - Top Tourist Tips

Old cities are the best places for tourists to visit, and London, being one of the oldest cities in the world, is no exception. Its history goes back over 2,000 years, back to the Roman Empire, which founded it as a civilian town seven years after the invasion of Britain in A.D. 43. They called it “Londinium.”

Like most historic cities, London was originally much smaller than it is today, about 350 acres, or 1.4 kilometres2. Its ancient core, the City of London, still retains its medieval boundaries, about 1 square mile. Since the 17th century, London included the metropolis developed around this core. That’s why London is such an interesting city to visit; one gets a sense of the city’s long history the further one goes from the core.

Over 15 million people visit London each year, making it the most visited city in the world. Tourists spend about £15 million a year there and avail of the luxury hotels in London to make their stay one to remember.  The city is great to visit all year; it has many indoor attractions to enjoy when the weather’s bad. The winter months, for example, can be very cold, with highs around 7°C (45°F). But what’s better than a Dickensonian Christmas? September and October are especially wet and rainy, but the summer months are quite comfortable, with average highs in the mid twenties C (seventies F).

As with most ancient cities, the best way to get around London is by foot. There are maps located throughout the city that assist tourists in navigating the often confusing streets, lanes, and alleys. Many of London’s main attractions are within walking distance of each other.

The London Underground, the oldest underground railway system in the world, is considered by many the easiest and quickest way to get around. London also has an excellent bus system, with its open-top tourist buses that offers tours of historical landmarks and tourists attractions, and provides 24-hour service every day of the week. These buses are located in Tavistock Square, half-way between the British Museum and the British Library.

All of London is worth seeing, but the best use of your time is to concentrate on historical Central London, home of many world-famous tourist attractions and home to some of the finest Luxury Hotels in West End London . There are many museums here, many of which offer free entry, but the British Museum is the most important. It holds seven million exhibits, including the Elgin Marbles, the Rosetta Stone, and the world’s oldest mummy.
