South Connellsville continues plans for centennial
-->South Connellsville Borough is celebrating 100 years, and plans are being finalized for the weeklong celebration -- July 18 to 24.
"A banner has been hung to announce the centennial," said Clyde Martz, councilman. We purposely left the Christmas lights up to be lit with the banner, replacing the Happy Holidays portion of the lights. The ones strung across the street will remain there for us to light up during the celebration."
Some citizens also have left their Christmas lights up and will turn them on for the centennial celebration.
Plans are under way for the queen contest. Contestants are currently selling tickets. The contestant from each age group who sells the most tickets will be crowned queen.
The winners will be announced and crowned at a 7 p.m. ceremony July 18 at the playground. There are four age groups -- Miss Tiny Tot Centennial Queen, 6 months to 1 year; Little Miss Centennial Queen, ages 2 to 6; Young Miss Centennial Queen, ages 7 to 12; and Miss Teen Centennial Queen, ages 13 to 18. A winner will be crowned in each category. They will ride in the parade Thursday night in convertibles provided by borough residents.
The South Connellsville VFD Firemen's Carnival opens July 18 and runs every night of the week from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at the playground, with rides, games, food and fun.
Firemen will compete in the Battle of the Barrel at 5:30 p.m. July 19 at the playground. Everybody is encouraged to come out and cheer them on.
A hot dog eating contest will take place at 7 p.m. July 20 at the playground.
The centennial parade starts at 7 p.m. July 21 and proceeds along South Pittsburgh Street. It is expected to be lengthy with fire companies, emergency equipment and music, along with area dignitaries in the procession. July 22 features a free concert starting at 8 p.m. at the playground with the band Punch performing.
Events start early July 23 with soapbox derby cars competing side by side down South Pittsburgh Street from the War Memorial to Murphy Avenue, near the Albright Church.
"We had a preliminary event on June 4. The cars were fun to look at. Some of them even had sponsors' names lettered on them and the competition was close in every race. Spectators got to see some great racing and there will be even more cars to cheer for on July 23," said Mayor Pete Casini. Racing starts at 9 a.m.
Featured later that day, from 1 to 6 p.m., will be a car and bike show, which last year had more than 100 participants. The street will be closed near the borough building and the firemen's parking lots also will be used. The event is sponsored by Scott C's Auto.
