Anger is in the 'jeans'

Kochi resident Rohit Nair is busy shopping with his mom at one of the city’s best malls.

He will soon be flying to New Zealand for his higher studies and before that he wants to snag the best outfit for college.

“Mama, pick up the best ultra low waist jeans for me. When I’m abroad, no one will bother if I reveal my Jockeys,” he says with a naughty smile.

Most youngsters in Kerala are fuming and say that wearing low-rise jeans is no crime.

The recent incident in which cops in Thrissur booked youngsters for wearing low-waist jeans, citing “public nuisance” for “exposing” their undergarments, has sparked off an agitated reaction from youngsters.

“It’s not about the kind of dresses you wear, but how you carry yourself is what matters. Moreover, vulgarity has nothing to do with one’s body or way of dressing but it is all about how one looks at others,” says Harish C.P., a photographer from Kochi.

“If wearing low-waist jeans is a crime, then all women, both young and old, who expose while wearing sarees should also be booked. If the cops are finding fault with young boys who expose undergarments’ while boarding a bus or holding on to an overhead railing, then they should also book girls, who dress indecently,” he says.

Jenniffer Anson from Kottayam, who has recently settled in down Mumbai, feels that wearing low-waist jeans is a taboo now because the boring khaki-clad cops envy young boys who look macho in their low-waist jeans.

“I used to wear super low-waist jeans during my college days. But I’ve stopped wearing them after my delivery,” she says.

“Please don’t tell me that there is going to be a ban on ultra low-waist jeans in Kerala now. I think the only people who have a problem with modern dresses are these narrow minded aunties. Most young girls don’t just love to wear low-waist jeans but even wish to see their boyfriends sport these kind of denims,” adds Jenniffer.

Nandita Nair, a freelance content writer, who is based in Kochi, prefers skinny jeans although she is comfy in low-waist jeans too. “Who are the cops to decide what we should wear? Even if there is a global ban, I will still wear what suits me best,” she asserts.

Amith Pillai, who now works in Fujairah, finds low-waist denims comfortable but isn’t sure if he is comfortable wearing them back home.

“Though I enjoy wearing low-waist jeans here, I can’t do the same in Kerala, as all my cousins would giggle,” he says.

Five Fashion Trends to Avoid

From the big hair and neon colours of the 80s to the muted tones and obsession with taupe, mauve, and oatmeal of the 90s, women's fashion is known for making dramatic changes. Skinny Jeans

Skin-tight denim only flatters the prepubescent form. If you are over the age of 16, a mother, or over seven stone, skinny jeans are not for you. Not only are they unflattering to the bum and hips, but they leave little to the imagination. This makes them inappropriate for anyone out of secondary school.

Huge Earrings

Designers have been trying to bring back gigantic, dramatic earrings for the past year or so. Don't fall prey to it. Having door-knockers on either side of your face is not attractive. Wearing them can also pull your lobes out of shape over time. If one is caught up in clothing or the strap of your handbag, your lobe can even be ripped! Keep your jewellery within normal proportions and give this fashion trend a pass.

Low-rise Jeans

The trend to wear your jeans very low on the hips only looks good if your body is completely flat from your ribs down. Read that part again: completely flat. If your torso or tummy rounds out even the slightest bit, the extra flesh will hang over the jeans. It's unsightly and a fashion that very few women can wear. While a waistline that is too high can make you appear heavier, a super-low waist has the same effect. Choose a mid-rise waist and don't be afraid to practise bending, sitting, and squatting in the changing rooms before purchasing them. This will ensure the jeans fit your properly.

Faux Fur

Even though it is fake, that doesn't mean it's attractive. Faux fur also has the added inconvenience of frequently shedding all over the rest of your outfit. Do you really want to walk around looking like you are the proud mum to 17 cats? Speaking of cats, some fur that is labelled as faux is actually cat or dog fur. This happens with clothing from foreign countries with alarming regularity, primarily Asia. If you are allergic to animals, fur of any kind is not a good idea.
