Learning Online Etiquette

A Port Macquarie based 18 year old is in trouble with the Police after creating page titled "All Port Macquarie Police are Corrupt."

In the same week, another locally created facebook page has caught the attention of police, the Port Macquarie "rootability" page.

Still Gherian is an IT and internet commentator. He believes that we haven't worked out the social rules for the internet yet. "Once it gets to the online environment we don't know how to behave."

He said that while it is expected that kids and teenagers will do silly and reckless things, the difference for this generation is that all their bad online decisions are public and far reaching. "Once it gets to 20, 30 years down the track someone is going to drag those things up, and it will be an embarassment," he said. He hopes that, because these mistakes are going to become more exposed, we may become less concerned about them.

Social media is new, but growing fast, "More Australians that are online do have a facebook page than don't," he said. You can tell a lot about a person by their facebook pages, and the information is used for advertising. "At some point I have the real feeling that people will react against the loss of privacy and there will be a change in the way that these social networking work to increase the privacy controls.

Rules of digital engagement

If we accept that we're willing to be slaves to social media, then knowing the ground rules of etiquette in the digital forum seems necessary. It's usually ignorance, not rudeness. But let's play it safe and lay it all out on the table, shall we?

To fight back, he hopes to inspire a new digital etiquette, his "Email Charter" of rules to thin overflowing inboxes. Rules range from writing "no need to reply," at the end of an email to limiting open-ended statements, like: "How can I help?

Internet Protocol with Tish: Netiquette: The New Golden Rule

Even the golden rule has been upgraded. It is now referred to as the "platinum rule." I do not joke. I was in my son's elementary school the other day and was greeted by a flip chart on an easel spouting the "Platinum Rule - Treat people The way They want to be treated!" Complete with incorrect and sporadic capitalization. Was the switch from gold to platinum made due to fluctuations in the commodities markets I wondered? Or was I just too busy in recent years -- not paying strict attention to the golden rule -- to realize that someone somewhere had decided to give it an upgrade? I'm not sure, but I am sure that this latest upgrade (from gold to platinum) rocked my world a little bit. It made me wonder if the old rules still apply in this new world of ours. Take netiquette for example. Currently, the rules of Internet engagement are whatever you want them to be. On some fronts it's like the wild West where you write the rules as you mosey along. A relative of mine habitually does the ALL CAPS thing. Granted, he has issues with anger management, but why take them out on those who read his written words. It makes me wonder if he handwrites in all capitals too. Then there's my friend who we'll simply refer to as Jay-Peg. JP is an email photo sending machine. Her daughter eats her first Oreo and a photo is blasted-out to everyone she has ever met. A little pancake batter spills on the countertop on a random Saturday morning and out shoots another picture to the email distribution list. The price of gas goes up by .03¢ and she snaps a photo of the digital price display on the gas pump and emails it from her smart phone. Wasn't she ever taught the golden rule in grade school? Strike that. Wasn't she ever taught the platinum rule in elementary school? My point is this: Internet etiquette, netiquette, basic common sense -- whatever you want to call it is, simply put, based on the age old golden/platinum rule of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Perhaps the word "unto" from Middle English throws people off, so I am going to take a stab at bringing this precious metal phrase into the 21st century. "If you do it to me, be prepared to have me do it right back at you. I'm just sayin." That may sound a little blunt and rude, but that is what Internet etiquette boils down to. Basic common courtesy.
