TMCnet's Dark Fiber Week in Review

Is looking to provide nationwide connectivity for businesses with locations across the U.S, reports Shanbhag.

Point of Presence (POP) sites have been provided along the route, which include Knoxville, Morristown, Johnson City, and Bristol. EarthLink said that the network expansion is now available for SONET transport service. According to EarthLink, the Phase II network expansion includes deployment of a new 131-mile diverse fiber optic route from Knoxville to Bristol.

In a statement, Jim O'Brien, EarthLink’s business executive vice president of Network Services and Customer Operations, said, “As we complete another crucial phase in this project, we are eager to provide increased connectivity options for a region that has been traditionally underserved." He added, "Providing the means for more effective technology deployment will allow institutions such as medical facilities to enhance healthcare delivery and better serve their constituencies.”

On the copper front, Ikanos Communications ’s NodeScale Vectoring technology is enabling next generation networks to achieve greater than 100 Mbps performance over standard copper. According to the developer, the fully G.Vector compliant technology  will help service providers deliver advanced high-speed multimedia services through traditional copper networks at one-tenth the cost of fiber to the home.

The company claims that crosstalk that occurs on copper wire across an entire node – up to 384 ports – is virtually eliminated by NodeScale Vectoring. Plus, it’s ability to identify and cancel crosstalk interference, independent of binder, cable or chassis, increases robustness and reliability, as per the TMCnet report.

Meanwhile, market research firm LightCounting released a report on 100 Gbps optical transmission technology, which is predicted to be a transformational technology in carrier networks. The study reveals that 10G will continue to remain as the largest market in terms of both revenue and units. While the sale of 100G DWDM line cards is expected to grow to atleast $2.3 billion by the year 2015.The study also foresees a new market evolving for 40 GigE and 100 GigE client-side optical transceiver modules.

In an effort to integrate network power management and optical fiber diagnostics, while supporting advanced traffic management and eliminating the need for a separate aggregation switch, PMC-Sierra  has introduced multi-port EPON OLT System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions that address the need to increase network functionality, improve reliability and reduce power consumption.

iPhone and earthlink web mail

I am considering getting the iPhone now that it is available through Verizon, but I was told at the Mac store that I will not be happy with earthlink as my email provider (because it uses POP), and when I view an e-mail on my iPhone it will automatically be removed from the Earthlink's server and on to my iPhone. So if I want to save it, it must be saved on the iPhone. Currently I can view my Earthlink messages on their web page, but when I connect through my home computer THEN they are downloaded from their server onto my computer. Thus I can save them or delete them from the computer. You could also set your home computer and iPhone's POP account settings to leave e-mail on the EarthLink account for a certain amount of time, or permanently. One way is to set your iPhone to leave the messages on the server permanently, and set your home computer's e-mail client to leave them on the server for 14 days (or 30 days, or 7 days, etc). If you wish to view email on more than one device, forget using POP - you should be using IMAP access. I'm not sure if Earthlink offers that, but your idea of using a GMail account is the best choice. If you change ISPs, the GMail account will always be there. Most ISPs offer forwarding to another email address, and GMail can retrieve your POP account email if they don't. That would turn all of your email into a fully accessible service - as IMAP, webmail, or POP. About the 'not working well with Macs' - I hear that FUD so often it sickens me. If something is using proper standards, ANYTHING that complies with those standards will work. When it comes to internet access, networking is an open, universal standard at that level. I've encountered people now with an internet connection and NO computer - they hook only to their TV with Netflix. When was the last time you hear that a certain ISP 'doesn't work well with Vizios'? Macs use the same TCP/IP standards Windows uses, Linux uses... your Bluray player uses!
