The world didn't come to an end last month, Festival cruised through three days without rain last weekend, the 20th LAV Budweiser Blues on the Mall series commences this evening with Janiva Magness, and a record-breaking Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park summer concert season kicks off tonight with a sold-out Huey Lewis show . THE BIG SHOW There's something about celebrating all things local, especially when downtown's become as vibrant a place as it has in Grand Rapids over the past 10 years. And this year's Local First Street Party – from 4 p.m.-midnight Saturday – has a plethora of high-caliber local bands, with the R&B/hip-hop of A.B! & Coconut Brown , rock/jazz/blues of Four Finger Five , rootsy rock of Nathan Kalish & the Wildfire , classic rock of Mid-Life Crisis , rock of Lansing's Cheap Girls and DJing of Colin Clive . With a host of sponsors, the event in front of Bistro Bella Vita off Grandville Avenue SW near Van Andel Arena also boasts, yes, local beer and food. Organizers claim 10,000 people attended last year's bash, so if the weather's good, I'm guessing you can expect huge throngs again this year.

Friday-Sunday – Rockford's 43rd Start of Summer celebration boasts a carnival and tons of kids' activities. A few musical highlights: American Legion Post 102, 330 Park Drive, hosts an Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond and Rod Stewart tribute show at 8 p.m. Friday and the Scottville Clown Band will perform in the downtown parade at 11 a.m. Saturday. Saturday's outdoor pavilion entertainment includes Peri Jill and Dan Van Lent (3 p.m.), 13th Hour (4:30 p.m.), The House Wreckers (6 p.m.) and The Outer Vibe (8 p.m.), followed by fireworks.

Saturday – It's “Local Celebrity Night” at the Whiskey Lounge, 1044 Godfrey Ave. SW, with performances by Newland and others starting at 8 p.m. Admission to the 21-and-older show is $5 and a dress code will be “strictly enforced.”

Saturday – Post-grunge/alt-metal band Seether headlines this year's Wingstock festival at 5 p.m.
