Potential fines could threaten Larimer GOP
The new leadership of the Larimer GOP has raised more than $13,000 since March to retire other debts left by Carillo, officials have said. And the party has upcoming fundraisers featuring Rep. Republican donors would face a choice of giving money to pay the penalties, or donating to other candidates and committees that can spend the money on election-related activity.
The party raised about $55,000 in 2008 and $30,700 in 2009, the two most recent years with reliable reporting.
County parties generally work on building party infrastructure, getting out the vote and contributing money to candidates. However, the Larimer GOP has donated little or no money to party candidates in recent years.
When asked if there was a way for the Larimer GOP to reorganize itself to eliminate fines and allow a new Republican organization to be formed, Miller said: Ive asked and nobody knows that answer.
The Larimer County party finds itself in unchartered territory because no Colorado party organization has ever approached such huge potential fines. Candidates are personally responsible for fines generated by their campaigns, but theres no individual liability with other committees and party groups.
