Review: 'Guys and Dolls' hits the mark

Set in New York during Prohibition, the story centers on a group of two-bit gamblers and the women who love them. In it, you'll meet the amicable Nicely Nicely, his pal, the alter shy Nathan Detroit, Nathan's long suffering fiance, Adelaide, the rakish high roller, Sky Masterson, and the object of Sky's desire, holy roller Sarah Brown, among myriad other players and their dolls. As Nathan Detroit, Attleboro's Chris Diorio deals up a wonderful performance. His Nathan is charming and fun to watch, and Diorio delivers the goods in the vocal department as well. I particularly enjoyed him in the comedic duet "Sue Me," which he performs with Janet Ferreri, who plays Adelaide, Nathan's fiancee. Ferreri's performance holds all the cards: Great voice, great comedic ability and great dance moves, particularly in Act II, where the choreography seems to get a much needed zap of energy. Sammons's Sarah could be as fascinating as vanilla ice-cream in the hands of a less capable actress, but her soprano isn't the lone trump card she holds; the girl can also act. I found her particularly good in the scene where she discovers the sweet sin of drinking rum, thanks to shark Masterson, played to royal flush perfection by Wrentham's Kevin Mischley. An area theater veteran, Mischley is a bankable blind bet in just about any role, but he makes Sky come to life - vividly.
