Intraocular lenses help cataract patients see near,far and in between

Fluffy white clouds floating across a brilliant blue sky can be quite pretty. Sometimes you can even see shapes in them, like a sailboat or an elephant. But if you have cataracts, the only clouds you may be seeing could be blocking the lens of your eye causing vision loss.

Cataracts are a common cause of eyesight loss that affects more than 20 million Americans age 40 and older. Surgery may be recommended by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) when cataracts begin to interfere with day-to-day activities, such as driving or reading. The operation involves removing the cloudy lens and then, in most cases, implanting a clear, artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore the eye’s ability to focus.

“The IOL is made of acrylic, plastic or silicone. It becomes a permanent part of the eye and does not require any additional care,” says Gurpreet Singh, M.D., ophthalmologist on the medical staff at Houston Northwest Medical Center. “If surgery is necessary for both eyes, a waiting period of two to four weeks usually is recommended to give the first eye time to heal.”

There are several different types of IOLs: multifocal and accommodating IOLs that offer the possibility of seeing well at more than one distance; toric IOLs that are designed to treat astigmatism (a type of refractive error of the eye that causes blurred vision); monovision IOLs that offer vision at one distance only; aspheric IOLs that provide better contrast sensitivity; and blue light-filtering IOLs that filter both ultraviolet and high-energy blue light.

Cataracts do not spread from eye to eye and are not caused by a growth or tumor. While most age-related cataracts take years to affect vision, how quickly the cataract develops will vary from person to person and even eye to eye. Eye drops, dietary supplements or other medications do not dissolve cataracts or slow down the progression of the condition. The only proven treatment for cataracts is surgery, which is one of the most common operations performed in the United States with a 90 percent success rate of improving vision.

Fashionista804: Orange and Blue

This is a really fun look to do, and very easy! I just did my regular neutral eye using (soft brown in the crease, Embark in the outer corner, and brule' on the lids) and then I took a Bluish purple pigment from mac (i don't know the name) and i just put about a tea drop of the pigment into a tray, then i took a couple of drops of fix+ (you could also use eyedrops or water) and mixed it with the loose pigment to create a thick liquid eyeliner. Then I just took a regular eyeliner brush and applied a winged liner to my lids. For the bottom, i just buffed in "atlantic blue" eyeshadow in the lash line. I finished the eye look off with some false lashes and mascara. For my lip, i have on "temperature rising" lip liner (limited edition) and "morange" lipstick. :) hope you all enjoyed and definitely try this look out!
