Dare County's first dog park to open next month

The dog days of summer are about to get a whole lot better for those four-legged Dare County residents who, every once in a while, won't mind a break from leash laws.

The county's first dog park - an open space surrounded by a chain-link fence where man's best friend, untethered to his owner, can run and socialize with other dogs - will open in Kitty Hawk next month. A section of the half-acre park has been set aside for dogs under 25 pounds.

Also near completion at the county park on Kitty Hawk Road are a playground, walking trail, skate park and picnic pavilion.

But it's the dog park that Dare residents requested more than anything else after the county bought the 11-acre property for about $1.2 million in 2006 and officials began weighing their options of how to use it.

Jodie Futch, owner of the Pet Gallery in Kill Devil Hills, said many customers of her pet-supply store have been waiting years for a place where dogs can roam free. She predicted the dog park will be a popular spot for owners to meet and compare notes.

"It's like when you take your kids to the park. You talk to all the other mothers," she said.

An official opening date for the park has not been set, but it will be before August, said Tim White, the county's public services director. In the meantime, dog owners may want to get their pooch's paperwork in order.

Only those dogs whose owners have registered them with the Dare County Parks and Recreation Department are allowed inside the park. The registration process requires owners to fill out an application, provide proof of their dogs' rabies vaccinations, sign a waiver releasing the county from any liability and review several pages of park rules.

Most of the rules on those pages wouldn't shock a seasoned dog owner: Clean up after your pet. Carry a leash. Don't litter.

Hoping to avoid liability and protect the public, the county has included some tougher guidelines. For example, children under 8 are not allowed inside the park because of the potential for some dogs to react aggressively to humans at eye level, White said.
