A Very Special Day - A Treasured Memory...

My Mom and Dad got married on the Fourth of July 1942. As a very young child I was aware that it was a holiday for everyone as I took note of the decorations, banners, etc. that adorned buildings and streets. Yet, for many a year I bought into my father’s tale of how absolutely everyone in the country celebrated the day because it was Ann and Michael’s anniversary. I recall arguing with a neighborhood playmate shouting at the top of my lungs, “It’s not the country’s birthday – it’s the day my Mom and Dad got married.” I stomped off unable to bear the stupidity of my dumbfounded friend.

Over the years my mother would admonish my father when he would start to feed my brothers and me that worn out story about how the parades, picnics and the ‘day off from work’ was the result of his taking my mother as his bride. As we grew older we would listen and tell him, “Yeah, Dad, we know – Happy Anniversary.” Although, we took great pleasure in putting on airs about how the anniversary of OUR parents’ wedding day was celebrated by everyone – whatever the reason.

After my older brother entered the service my ‘little’ brother and I would make feeble attempts at buying anniversary gifts for my parents. We would try to tie the gift into the red, white and blue theme of the day. Several years we did the t-shirts covered in American flags; red, white and blue flowers could be found all about many years; and one year we found placemats with all the past presidents pictured and more information than you’d ever want to know about them. One year, I think it might have been a big anniversary ending in a zero or a five; we wanted to do something really special. We started shopping way before the 4 – maybe even in May. We wanted to get something bigger and better than the usual flowers, t-shirts or red, white and blue cupcakes.

We went shopping with a vengeance not having the slightest idea what we were looking for but, as I repeatedly told my brother, “We’ll know it when we see it.”  Walking around the PX (Post Exchange) at Fort Monmouth one Saturday afternoon we spotted a charcoal grill. Now remember - this was over fifty years ago – barbecue grills as we know them today did not exist. This grill was probably all of 20 inches across and the base was a shallow black bowl.  One highlight was that on two of the three legs of this magnificent contraption there were wheels – can you imagine WHEELS?  And it had a handle and you could move it about even after the charcoal briquettes were cooking away. We saw it and we knew – we had to get this new fangled grill – what a perfect anniversary gift this would be. Unfortunately the price tag was - $16.00.  Might not sound like much today but it was more than either one of us had ever seen back then.

They do have an online website and stores throughout the country. The pink paper is just wrapping paper. I am determined to make this box for my daughter’s wedding, however, I have looked and high and low and cannot, for the life of me, find a box this large. I am guessing that with lid, we would need approx 15″ tall or more for cards to fit in. Yes?? Please tell us where to buy such a box. Thanks much! You are a very good teacher. Those are lovely! We actually had a similar one and it didn’t take long to make and we had about 150 guests. I also suggest following a stationary theme…there’s a great guideline to go by, plus other great ideas in the wedding planning book The “W” Day by Giulla Macchia.
